We hope you are all having a wonderful and well-deserved break. As it is half way through the summer holidays, you might be running out of fun ideas to keep you and your family entertained. So, we have gathered a few local schemes to share with you!

Free Cycle Training

Derbyshire County Council have created an amazing opportunity called the ‘County Rider Scheme’. So, people who live, work or study in Derbyshire can get free one-to-one cycle training, to people aged 18 or over. It is really easy for you to apply, you can just do it through the Derbyshire County Council website. (See link below). The County Rider scheme offers up to 4 training sessions and each one can last up to 2 hours. This will be dependent on your instructor’s assessment of your skill level and what you want to achieve. Why not get involved today?

Summer Reading Challenge

If you have children, this scheme might be perfect for you! Derbyshire County Council are doing a summer reading challenge for children aged between 4 and 11. The challenge is to read 6 or more library books over the summer. For each book they read, they get a sticker and once they have read them all, they will get a medal and certificate! You can join the local library or you can sign up online.

The theme this year is ‘sports and games’ and some amazing libraries are running different sports games and events that you and your children can get involved with! You can find your local library with the link below and check out which different sports games and events are happening in which library in your area. You can also find more information at the Summer Reading Challenge website. Please find the links below.

Free Bus Service

The next two Sundays, Derbyshire bus operators are offering a free bus service (Sunday 19th August 2023 and Sunday 26th August 2023). The free fares are being paid for from the £47 million that the government awarded us to improve bus travel in Derbyshire. You can check out the link to see which bus operators in Derbyshire are part of the scheme, in this link. So, why not take your family for a lovely day out for a very low cost!

If you didn’t already know, all bus services on every other day are £2 for a one way ticket in any direction. The £2 bus fare cap will run until 31 October 2023. From 1 November 2023, the bus fare cap will change to £2.50 for single tickets. To find out more information, please click this link below.
