Within a school environment, all too often external pressures weigh heavy on our shoulders and it can take its toll on us. This may be pressure to attain to ever demanding standards, or supporting families and pupils that depend on your or sadly, pressure from the leadership of the school. In an ideal world, we would stop to get the support we need, as none of us can pour from an empty cup.

I know, as I have most certainly been there, that we spend all our time looking out for others and neglect ourselves. I used to liken managing family and work commitments to balancing on a see-saw and at times, we can easily ‘fall off’.

As mental health lead when I was in school, I worked hard to make sure children’s mental health was prioritised but there often isn’t time to prioritise our own wellbeing.

This is something our school organisations should put high on the agenda, or more teachers and school staff will burn out.

But… there is support out there. In this section of Claire’s Staffroom, there are links, resources and materials which may just set us off on a journey to put some  energy and time back into ourselves.

Remember – you are the most valuable resource a school has!

Have a read of the following articles / take a look at the videos. I found the one about rethinking perfectionism really interesting!

I really wished I had known about the Pomodoro technique for time management! Give it a try!

The Education Support website is a one stop shop for looking after school staff. Here are some resources you may find useful and helplines.
